Test in Norwegian – higher level (Bergenstesten)

The Norwegian Language Test – Higher Level (Bergenstesten) is an official language test that documents Norwegian language skills at B2 and C1 levels. The test is approved as documentation for admission to higher education in Norway, in applications to employers, and in connection with UDI applications for permanent residence permits and citizenship.

Test format
The Norwegian test - higher level consists of two different tests.

Oral test
- Listening and pronunciation skills
- Conversation and presentation
Tests the ability to express oneself in Norwegian in different situations

Written test
The test consists of two parts, each lasting 2.5 hours.
- Reading and Listening Comprehension (Part 1)
- Explanation Writing (Part 1)
- Grammar, Vocabulary and Expressions (Part 2)
- Written Production (Part 2)
The tests can be taken independently of each other.
The results of the written test are usually available approximately 5 weeks after the test date.
The results of the oral test are available within 1 week after the test date.
The written test is digital, and you must bring your own computer and headphones with a cable.
Levels and assessment
- B2-level: Can understand the main points of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including academic discussions within one's own field. Can participate in conversations with such spontaneous and fluent language that communication with native speakers is not tiring for either party. Can write clear, detailed texts on a wide range of topics, explaining a point of view on a current issue and arguing for and against different options.
- C1-level: Can understand a wide range of longer, demanding texts and understand messages that are not directly expressed. Can express oneself fluently and spontaneously without any particular sense of searching for ways of expression. Can use language flexibly and appropriately for social, academic and professional purposes. Can write clear, well-structured and detailed texts on complex topics, showing mastery of different sentence patterns, conjunctions and connecting markers.
The Norwegian Test – Higher Level measures Norwegian language skills at levels B2 and C1. The framework's global scale describes these levels as follows:
To pass, you must pass all five sub-tests of the written test.
Test locations
The Norwegian Test – Higher Level (Bergenstesten) can currently be taken in Oslo, Bergen and several other cities in Norway. The test will soon be offered in even more Norwegian cities, as well as at selected test locations abroad.

Oral test
Results ready within 14 days

Written test
Results ready within approximately 7 weeks
If the result is "Passed", you will receive a digital test certificate.
Registration and rules
By signing up, you agree to the following terms:
- The registration deadline is 14 days before the test date. You have 14 days to cancel from the time of registration, but never longer than the registration deadline. After the registration deadline, cancellation is not possible, regardless of when you registered.
- Cancellations will result in a refund up until the registration deadline, after which it is not possible to cancel.
- Changing the test location is possible up to 14 days before the test day.
- Results are published in your candidate profile and you receive a digital test certificate.
- You will be offered a place on the waiting list if the test is fully booked.
