Norwegian for beginners, basic user (A1)
Norwegian for beginners is for those who want a thorough, practical introduction to the language. The aim is to quickly be able to get by in simple everyday situations. Language teaching is undertaken using a communicative method. Participants are encouraged to use the language actively in practical, everyday situations, with plenty of opportunities to practice and repeat. The aim is that participants quickly gain confidence using the language. Folkeuniversitetet is an officially recognized provider of Norwegian language training. This means that if you take a Norwegian course with the teaching form virtual classroom, the course hours are approved by the UDI when applying for a permanent residence permit.

About the course
In this course you learn
- basic grammar and pronunciation
- words and phrases to introduce yourself and ask others questions about themselves
- words and phrases related to everyday situations
- how to ask and answer questions as well as express basic agreement / disagreement
- write simple texts
- read simple texts such as menus, advertisements etc.
The learning goals above, apply to all of beginner level A1. There are also individual beginner courses covering different parts of this level, see course overview.
Who is the course for?
Norwegian for beginners is suitable for those who have little or no prior knowledge of Norwegian and want a solid foundation to begin communicating in Norwegian.
What you learn at the beginner level also serves as a good basis for further learning of Norwegian for studies and / or at work.
Test yourself
Are you unsure of what level you are at? Then the level test is for you. It takes between half an hour to an hour and a half to complete. Take the test on Eurotest.
Implementation
Instruction consists of listening exercises, group work, role play, oral exercises / conversation, presentations and homework. The courses can be taken as ordinary classroom teaching, online teaching or a combination of these.
Educators
Our teachers have training in teaching Norwegian and/or Norwegian as a Second Language (NSL). They also have experience in Teaching Norwegian for language minorities.
Exam
You receive a diploma if you have attended 75% of classes. After level A2 you may take Norskprøve A1-A2. More information at kompetansenorge.no
Where to now?
After Norwegian for Beginners, we recommend you take Norwegian for Pre-intermediate learners (CEFR level A2). This takes you to Norwegian level A2.
Following these first two courses you can take the Norwegian test A1-A2. For more information, see norskproven.no or kompetansenorge.no.
